The delegation is in Oman for a series of meetings and to check on the progress of preparations in advance of Muscat 2010.
MABGOC Director General Eng. Habib Macki explained the Sports City project, which began development in 2008.
"The Sports City includes a combination of temporary and permanent structures providing sporting, leisure and lifestyle activities along a picturesque sea-view marina," he said.
Locate 125km from Muscat, the Al-Musannah Sports City is a one-million square metre purpose built facility that will act as the Games-hub during the 2nd Asian Beach Games Muscat 2010 this December.
Playing host to seven of the 14 sports on the Muscat 2010 calendar, the Sports City will see Asia's athletes participating in: beach handball, beach sepaktakraw, beach soccer, beach volleyball, beach Waterpolo, sailing and jetski sport.
Aside from the competition sites, the Sports City contains a village comprising of: a four-star hotel, a serviced apartment building, an athletes' residence building, the Main Operations Centre, an events plaza, and a marina. In addition, Games services such as medical facilities, a dining hall, coffee shops, fast food outlets, concession stands, retail facilities, among other amenities, will be available to Games participants.
The Marina Hotel
The Marina Hotel, a four-star facility comprised of 233 accommodation rooms will feature restaurants, retail outlets and office space for the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and MABGOC at Games-time. In April 2010 a Management Agreement was signed with Millennium Hotels and Resorts to manage the hotel's facilities and operations. As one of the world's largest hotel groups, with more than 120 hotels across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, the Marina Hotel is the group's first hotel in Oman.
The Marina Hotel will be a landmark element during the Games offering superior service, facilities and a true taste of Arabian hospitality. Following the staging of Muscat 2010 the hotel will continue to serve visitors from around the globe using the Sports City as a destination for sport and eco-tourism.
Marina Apartments
Comprising of 30 duplex apartments, 28 studio apartments, and 16 one-bedroom apartments, this facility will provide office space for the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Services Centre, NOC Business Centre, Medical Centre, Ceremonies office space, Athletes' Village office space, and a leisure and recreation centre.
Athletes' Residence Building
Comprised of apartments ranging in size from one to five-bedrooms, this building will accommodate athletes and team official competing at the Sports City. With all the comforts of a "home away from home", the apartments will provide a convenient and enjoyable stay for the visiting delegations from across Asia.
Only a few minutes walk from the competition venues, the Athletes' Residence Building provides teams with the perfect place to rest between matches.
The Main Operations Centre
This two-storey building will house the MABGOC Operations Centre on the top floor, the Information Technology Control Centre on the 1st floor, and the International Broadcast Centre on the ground floor, enabling media to share the beach action with the world.
The Marina
Centrally located within the Sports City, the Marina will be a focal point for activity during the Games. Directly in front of the Marina Hotel, Marina Apartments and Main Operations Centre, the marina will have 54-berths at Games-time, with future expansion planned for post-Games.
Over 321,000 cubic metres of rock and 46,000 cubic metres of concrete we used in the construction of the marina. Access steps leading to two separate man-made beaches will provide up to 2,500 spectators a front row seat to the sporting action.
Event Plaza
The Events Plaza is a 2,200 square metre platform situated as an outcropping into the Marina. Playing a key role at Games-time the Events Plaza will host the traditional Team Welcome Ceremonies upon arrival of each National Olympic Committee. The Chef de Mission from each delegation will lead his or her team into the Plaza for a flag raising ceremony and playing of their national anthem. The flags will remain raised for the duration of the Games.
During Muscat 2010 the Events Plaza will play host to numerous cultural events and activities and provide an entertainment facility for delegations staying in the Sports City. Flanked with man-made beaches on either side, the Events Plaza is ideally situation as a meeting point directly in front of the Marina Apartments and Marina Hotel.
With the objective of providing consistent quality service and a safe environment for Asia's athletes to compete, the Al-Musannah Sports City is a world-class facility and newest sporting and tourism development in Oman.
